Naked Marketing Podcast with Guest, Brian Russell
I had the wonderful opportunity to speak with Dr. Brian Russell (though he prefers to leave out his title when being introduced), who owns his own leadership coaching and consulting business. Unlike other business coaches, Brian is a university professor and pastor who uses his unique experiences to guide people towards their own special talents.
Brian is a great example of how doing what you love can lead to a successful career. While he already found fulfillment as a teacher and pastor, he felt that he could offer much more to small- to medium-sized business owners who felt stuck both in their personal and professional lives.
He began his coaching and consulting business three and a half years ago and has focused his efforts on creating genuine and deep relationships. This translates into his marketing strategy: Brian initiates conversations with powerful people and then nurtures that relationship for years. His approach is deep, not wide and he prefers having close connections to his clients rather than having shallower ones with more people.
He encourages viewers and listeners to pursue their passions and be authentic with themselves.
Brian’s Top Suggestions On How To Avoid Makings Mistakes
- Recognize analysis paralysis – One of the biggest mistakes that Brian has made while starting his business was researching every single facet of managing one before getting his feet wet. He says that while doing one’s due diligence is a good thing, overcomplicating matters so much that you end up doing nothing is also detrimental.
- Be authentic – Whomever you coach or whatever you do, approach it with complete awareness of who you are and why you are doing what you do. People can inherently tell when you are truly passionate about what you are offering or talking about.
- Be genuine – Similar to the previous point, you also have to know what your strengths and limitations are. Don’t try to talk to thousands of people at one time if you have better success with one-on-one conversations.
