Marketing Mistake 60: Running Ads Without Understanding the Platform

Naked Marketing Podcast with Guest, Beate Chelette

In this episode of Naked Marketing, we meet Beate Chellete, an experienced growth advocate. She works with entrepreneurs and helps them build their businesses by improving their internal processes. Beate also helps them review their perceptions about money and leadership so that they transform from mere business owners to business leaders.

Beate graduated with a degree in photography but always felt that her passion lay in helping startups expand their brands. She believes that anyone can become successful, as long as they are patient and consistent with their marketing efforts.

All the same, business owners should be careful about how they measure success. Early in her career, Beate became notorious on YouTube for her women empowerment videos. These videos received a lot of views and could be considered successful in terms of watch rate. However, those views were mostly from detractors and trolls who painted a negative image of her.

Unfortunately, she had also run ads to promote these videos, which further added fuel to the fire. She uses her experience as a cautionary tale of knowing what to market and understanding what the audience wants on each platform.

Beate’s Top Suggestions On How To Avoid Makings Mistakes

  • Having a “successful” campaign isn’t necessarily a good thing for your brand image – Beate became “famous” for the wrong reasons. After releasing several YouTube videos meant to empower single mothers, she inadvertently became known as an “anti-feminist” and a “bigot”, even though her intention was purely based on her own experience. So, while YouTube considered her “successful” because of her views, she wasn’t building the image that she wanted.
  • Consider hiring third-party experts – There is nothing wrong with hiring third-party professionals who are experts in their field. This is especially important if you want to create a meaningful and impactful marketing strategy.

Keep moving forward, despite mistakes – Do what you love to do with grace and consideration. If you fail, don’t beat yourself up over it. Learn from your mistakes and move forward.
